Blur the Noise, Find the Focus
A photographer’s understanding for creative clarity and the tool I made for it.
You’ve opened your laptop three times today.
Made coffee. Answered a text. Scrolled.
Checked your planner. Checked it again.
And still… you don’t know where to start.
The big goals feel heavy.
The little stuff feels pointless.
And you’re wondering—why can’t I just do the thing?
Here’s what I know:
That’s not laziness.
That’s creative overload.
And funny enough, photography taught me how to spot it.
The too-much-in-the-frame problem
When I first started photography, I tried to capture everything. Every face, every backdrop, every sweet detail.
But the photos didn’t land. They were technically fine, but… forgettable.
Why?
Because the eye didn’t know where to go.
There was no focal point. Just clutter. A full frame doesn’t make a powerful image—it makes a noisy one. And a noisy image gets skipped.
Turns out, our days work the same way.
When everything feels important, nothing gets traction.
When your brain is holding all the tabs open, no single task gets your best.
Your to-do list isn’t the problem.
Your attention is just overwhelmed by input.
The Reframe
This isn’t a productivity problem.
It’s a focus problem.
You don’t need to push harder.
You need to zoom in.
One focal point. One subject.
Let the rest blur.
Not forever.
Just long enough to see clearly again. To gain focus.
Permission to slow the shutter
You’re not behind.
You’re not scattered.
You’re not doing it wrong.
You’re just in need of a slower shutter speed.
And you get to slow it.
You get to let something go blurry so you can bring something else into sharp relief.
Clarity doesn’t come from doing everything.
It comes from choosing one thing.
Try this today
The next time your day feels like noise, pause.
Literally—pause. (I wrote about it! Rest is a Leadership Strategy)
Close your eyes and ask: “What actually matters right now?”
(Not “what’s urgent.” Not “what’s expected.” What matters.)
That’s your subject. That’s your shot. Give it your focus. Let the rest blur for now. Focus.
