You're saturated.

The Creative Return is a self-guided toolkit for the seasons when you're doing everything right and something still feels off.

You know a lot. You've done the work. You've read the books, taken the courses, filled the journals.

And still, something feels off.

Stacked. Like all the knowing has piled up on top of itself and you can't quite find the thread back to what actually matters.

Saturation doesn't get solved by adding more. It gets solved by returning to what's already true.

"Feels like a reset button for my soul."

— Doug G.

Why does the Creative Return exist?

For years, I dreamed of creating a toolkit of everything I have collected, tried, adapted and used. I've used these tools to support self-leadership, manage teams, and mentor others through pivots. I've seen it as a course and as a book. And this is where I landed: an accessible toolkit as an organized collection of returns to help support your next decision.

I also need this for myself.

Over two decades of building businesses, I kept accumulating things that worked. Every time something shifted, whether it was a new technology, a new philosophy, a burnout, a breakthrough, I was quietly adding to the pile. But the pile had no home.

When things got hard, I didn't know where to reach. When clarity felt far away, I didn't have a compass. When I needed to return to what I knew worked, I was digging through notebooks and old files and half-remembered conversations.

So I built the place I wanted to return to.

From the contrast. The confusion. The burnout. The successes, the joy, the abundance, and the in-between. From all of it.

I built it for me first. And now I'm making it available for you.

I've shared these tools with the interns I've mentored, the people I network with, and the friends who own their own businesses. Watching them reach for these practices as their own, in their own seasons, for their own decisions, showed me something I didn't expect: how much they live outside of me. How much they support other people's successes too.

You deserve a place to return to, too.

"You've helped me clear the clutter of my mind to bring awareness to what I'm doing, what I want to be doing, and presenting a roadmap to get there."

— Cindy Wonderful

The same toolkit that produced all of that
is now available to you.

What does it actually look like to build something from your own experience?

In March 2020, the day after sheltering-in-place orders went into effect in Baton Rouge, I said yes to something that made no logical sense.

I picked up my camera and started photographing families on their front porches.

Not because I wanted to defy anyone. I knew I couldn't sit by and watch my fellow small business owners and community suffer the impact of having to stop everything.

The first thing I did was check in with my values, my capacity, and what I knew was mine to lead. That check-in took about ten minutes. The decision was immediate.

The Front Porch Project was a pay-it-forward mission to support local business using two of my strongest skill sets: taking photos and leading others through a pivot.

Over 40 photographers joined the mission almost immediately. Together we photographed more than 4,000 families during months of social distancing. We generated $1.28 million in economic impact back into our local communities.

I personally delivered over 900 porch portraits, more than I photographed in the previous eight years of my career combined. On my best day, I photographed 60 families. My average was 30 a day, shooting every other day, for over three months straight.

I never burned out. Not because I was superhuman.

Because I was organized around what actually mattered. The same standard operating procedure I used for a normal week of two or three sessions scaled to 3000% production because the foundation was solid. Values clear. Priorities named. My Genius Zone identified. Capacity honored. I delegated tasks and led my team. I used creative blocking not only to protect my capacity but also to create a communication flow so the team could manage client expectations without asking me.

Then I looked back.

Not even four months before the pandemic, in the fall of 2019, I had walked away from a passion and purpose I'd spent four solid years trying to make something worth doing every day. There was no announcement. I put down the consulting work and returned all my attention to photography.

Defeated. Frustrated. Full of sadness and grief.

That was a time when I was trying to force my purpose onto people instead of living it. The year my calendar was full and none of it felt like mine. The year I kept moving but wasn't going anywhere that mattered.

Holding that year up against the Front Porch Project, I could see the difference clearly. Not in the output. In the energy. When I was living my purpose, I could work the longest days of my career and feel alive. When I was performing my purpose, I collapsed under a fraction of the load.

That contrast is how the C.A.L.M. compass was born. Not from a book. From the distinct difference between those two pivotal moments in my life.

It was in the year after the Porch Project that I began to understand what Creative Adaptive Intelligence actually was: the human capacity to make a decision, in real time, from the priority or value that is active in that moment, under uncertain conditions. It is active when a value or priority is shaping the choice. (not the state a person is in while choosing.)

"I have met very few people who are organized creatives. Jenn is one of those. Her thought process for business blows me away."

So what did these tools actually produce?

  • The same standard operating procedure I used for three sessions a week scaled to 60 portraits a day.

  • Creative blocking created a team communication flow so everyone could manage client expectations and deliverables without asking me a single question.

  • 40 photographers mentored.

  • Walked into a new city with clarity about what vendors actually need, and built one of the most talked-about bridal events of the year because of it.

  • Made a values-based decision to leave, move 900 miles away, and build something from scratch in a city where I knew no one. Because I loved the culture and trusted the move.

None of this happened because I had a perfect plan. It happened because I had a compass, a toolkit, and a purpose.

The best parts of people are patiently waiting for permission to show up. If someone comes to mind when reading this, I would be so grateful if you passed it along.

More people need a place to return to.

What is a Creative Return, exactly?

The Creative Return is a self-guided toolkit for people who are done performing their way forward and ready to move from what's actually true.

Instead of a course with steps to complete, it's a place to come home to yourself. A rhythm, not a race. A return, not a performance.

35 practices across Clarity, Adaptability, Leadership, and Momentum, each one built to meet you exactly where you are. No pressure to start at the beginning. No right way to move through it.

Where you are, now, with what you have, trusting that the next decision is there waiting for you to choose it.

"Jenn will SEE you and understand where you are and help you start moving in the direction you want to go. I honestly felt a sense of relief after talking through my idea. I have a much clearer direction on who I am as a coach and how to market myself."

— Amy C.

Practices you won’t find anywhere else.

Implicatory Denial(Clarity)
There's a name for the thing where you don't argue with the facts, you quietly avoid what they'd ask you to feel or change. Susan, a massage therapist and client, sat down to do her books one night and finally added up the number she'd been sidestepping for years. Nearly $35,000 quietly given away in discounts. The hard part wasn't the number. It was what it meant.

She wasn't avoiding the math. She was avoiding the meaning.

This practice gives you language for a pattern you've been living inside without a name. And named things lose their grip.

Get Curious About Resistance(Adaptability)
Maybe you're not stuck. Maybe you're standing guard. What looks like procrastination is often protection, your system's quiet way of saying "this part still feels tender." This practice helps you stop fighting the resistance and start listening to what it's actually guarding.

You can't outwork your resistance. You can only outlove it.

Rest as a Leadership Strategy(Leadership)
When I was little, I'd find my mom lying on the couch, eyes closed, everything still. In our house, stillness was rare. Four teenage boys, a full schedule, a house in constant motion. I'd tiptoe up and whisper "Mama, what are you doing?" She'd open one eye and smile. "I'm just resting my eyes." She wasn't checked out. She was claiming her clarity before the next wave came crashing in. That pause was her power move. This practice helps you make it yours.

Rest isn't the reward. It's the reset. And it's how you lead.

Discover What No Longer Serves You(Clarity)
There are seasons when you're doing all the right things and something inside still keeps clearing its throat: Hey. Is this even your life? This practice helps you see that misalignment isn't a failure. It's a signal. With the Alignment Audit, you sort what stays, what can be composted with gratitude, and what's been waiting in the wings that deserves room to grow.

I wasn't exhausted from doing too much. I was exhausted
from doing too much that didn't feel like mine anymore.

The Genius Return(Momentum)
Most of us aren't stuck in our Zone of Incompetence. We're stuck in our Zone of Excellence: successful, capable, and slightly suffocating. Rewarded for something that doesn't feel like the whole truth of what we have to offer. This practice, built on Gay Hendricks' framework from The Big Leap and extended through Creative Adaptive Intelligence, helps you stop chasing your Genius and start recognizing when it's already knocking.

Your Genius Zone isn't something you earn.
It's something you return to.

"My answers to the prep questions surprised me. I had things more together than I realized. Realizing I knew more than I thought."

— Michelle S.

What does a real week inside the Creative Return look like?

This is how I use it. Every week. Depending on where I am and what I'm moving through.

Some weeks I open Sort the Noise on a Monday morning because my brain is already loud before I've had coffee. I spend ten minutes filtering what's actually urgent from what's familiar anxiety dressed up as importance. I walk into the week grounded instead of reactive.

Some weeks I hit a wall on something I care about and I reach for Get Curious About Resistance. I name what the resistance is actually protecting. Sometimes it's fear of being seen. Sometimes it's exhaustion. Either way, naming it means it stops running the show.

Some weeks I need the Alignment Audit because I can feel the drift, the slow accumulation of yeses that don't feel like mine anymore. I sort what stays and what gets composted. I leave with more space than I started with.

And some weeks I reach for the C.A.L.M. compass to tell me which door to walk through. Because I built it for exactly that: the moments when I don't know where to start and I need something to meet me where I am, not where I think I should be.

I made this for me to use. Every time I reach for it, I meet something I needed. That's why I'm making it available for you.

"She taught me how to chew a little piece of the pie rather than trying to eat the whole thing in one sitting."

35 practices across four sections
Each one built around a real moment of friction, a real shift, and a real tool. Short enough to fit your actual life. Honest enough to actually land.

  • Clarity Practices are for the mornings when your brain is louder than the room, and you can feel something is off but can't name it. You leave with the noise sorted and the signal clearer.

  • Adaptability Practices meet you when the path shifts. When what you planned for isn't what's here, and you're not sure how to move without losing yourself in the process.

  • Leadership Practices start on the inside. Before you lead a team, a project, or a room, you're leading yourself. These practices are for that layer, the one nobody else sees.

What you will find

Permission. Presence. Tools that bend to you. Practices that meet you where you are. A place to return to, again and again, without judgment and without proving yourself.

What do people leave with?

They don't leave with motivation that fades by Tuesday. They leave with orientation. A clearer sense of where they are and what's theirs to do next. Receipts only they can offer, because they stopped performing certainty and started trusting what they actually know.

About Jenn

I'm Jenn Ocken. I've spent over two decades helping people find the move that resonates with where they are now. I built the Creative Return because I needed it too. It's the space I wished I had on the messy Sundays.

I'm also the person who identified and gave Creative Adaptive Intelligence its language: the human capacity to meet uncertainty with clarity, discernment, and values-based choice in real time. Without urgency or borrowed certainty. Staying true to yourself in the process. You've been using it all along. This is where you learn to trust it.

When I'm not photographing, mentoring, or coaching, you'll find me watering one of 42 houseplants who haven't told me their names yet, hosting porch hangs that accidentally become improv sets, or designing another journal page because I simply cannot not.
